10 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: The Double Life Of Chris Kanyon
9. It’s Chronologically Confused
There's a weird bit in VICE's retelling when DDP claims that Kanyon feared his push as the Mortal Kombat-inspired Mortis might be halted by the creation of the nWo. Erm...what? The New World Order burst onto the scene in the summer of 1996, and Kanyon started wearing the mask in '97.
Basically, there's no way the nWo wrecked his gimmick. He was repackaged after Hogan, Nash and Hall changed wrestling forever. It seems that somebody got their timeline a little mixed up here; later, Page also says that Kanyon was worried DDP's own push might be killed by those nasty lads in black and white.
Again, what?
If anything, going against the nWo turned DDP into a bigger star. He became everyman babyface foil to the likes of Nash and Hall, then eventually headlined pay-per-views opposite Hulk. VICE's odd pretence that Mortis landed pre-nWo is weird to watch when one knows the actual chronology of WCW's product.
