Post-WWF tryout, Page returned to WCW (when Dusty went back there) and returned to his role as a manager. Backstage, Magnum TA pulled him aside and said, "Dusty doesn’t want to tell you this, but we’re not gonna let you manage anymore”; Page thought he’d done something wrong, but Magnum told him he was outshining everybody he worked with, and joked that they should put some boots and tights on him to see if he could wrestle.

The wheels started turning in DDP's head.

He had just seven months left on his WCW contract, so he decided to hit the Power Plant training facility hard and learn to work some holds. Nobody around Page could even believe he was trying this. The Fabulous Freebirds laughed in his face, and even Scott Hall thought it was a mistake.

DDP told Austin that he "didn't have a choice". His dream was gonna be 100% dead if he didn't adapt and show everyone who doubted him that they were wrong.
