10 Things We Learned From Inside The Ropes With Paul Heyman (London)
Brock Lesnar's advocate had a lot to say in front of a sold-out York Hall...
He's the advocate for the Best Incarnate, Brock Lesnar, a master of cutting a promo, the former owner and booker of ECW and a 35-year veteran of the wrestling business. He is one of the most talented men in the sports entertainment industry with a truly fascinating story and a boatload of charisma.
Ladies and gentleman, his name is Paul Heyman and on Tuesday July 12th, he engaged in a question and answer session in front of a sold-out York Hall in London. This was a first for Heyman, who had not to this point done a live Q&A in his entire career (nor an official shoot interview for that matter), and his talents were secured by none other than WhatCulture's own Kenny McIntosh and his hardworking Inside the Ropes team.
Just days after Lesnar downed the No.8 world ranked heavyweight at UFC 200, Heyman flew to the UK for this historic event, as well as two others set to take place in Manchester and Glasgow on the 13th and 15th.
The show was expertly organised and run and Heyman himself did not disappoint. Far from it.
He answered every question honestly and entertainingly and covered moments from his early days as Paul E. Dangerously in WCW, his time as the leader of the cultish ECW and, of course, his tenure working as a commentator, booker and performer for WWE.
There was a lot to take in, but these 10 things stick out in the memory the most.
10. Brock's UFC Future And SummerSlam Match With Orton
The evening began with talk of Lesnar's triumph over Mark Hunt at the historic UFC 200 pay-per-view and his forthcoming match with Randy Orton at SummerSlam.
Heyman says he was a nervous wreck in the weeks leading up to the fight (part and parcel of being a 'New York Jew' according to him), worrying about what would happen, while Brock was calm and confident. According to Heyman, nobody outside of Lesnar's immediate family was more nervous than he was and he breathed a huge sigh of relief when Lesnar won via unanimous decision.
As far as Lesnar fighting in the UFC again and possibly challenging for the UFC Heavyweight Championship? Heyman replied by quoting Brock in the post-fight press conference, simply saying that 'Brock Lesnar is going to do what Brock Lesnar wants to do'. If Lesnar wants to fight in UFC again, he will, but that's his decision to make and he doesn't know either way.
Regarding SummerSlam, Heyman doesn't agree that Orton is a 'tomato can' for Lesnar to breeze past. He's been out of action for eight months now and will be hungry and keen to make an impression against one of the guys he broke into the business with. It's a huge match and the result is not a foregone conclusion.
Brock's advocate also posits that Orton is only one RKO from shocking the world and slaying The Beast, likening that scenario to Brock ending The Streak at WrestleMania XXX.
