Owen told Martha when they were only young that he didn't want to follow his brothers into the wrestling business full-time. He wanted to become a Physical Education teacher, and only agreed to help out his dad's struggling Stampede Wrestling territory because houses were down and the promotion needed fresh blood.

His plans to study teaching fell by the wayside when the course was delayed, and Owen ended up wrestling after all. It was never his long term goal, Martha claims; she told Jericho that Hart applied to the fire department every single year he was wrestling to try and get out of the business.

He also applied to become a customs officer in the United States. Anything that'd offer a route out of the biz sounded good to Owen, especially if it meant he could still help others and provide for his family. That's all he wanted to do.

Wrestling was just something that helped his dad, but it was challenging to escape.
