Matt's interview with Jericho is nothing but honest, and that's what makes it so worthwhile. There's no pretence or ego in there at all. That's true even when Matt is talking about his brother Jeff and their respective roles in The Hardy Boyz tag-team.

As soon as the team caught fire in the late-90s, Matt realised that he couldn't do all the same high-flying stuff Jeff could. So, he slid into a "quarterback" position and came up with many of the ideas the tandem used in-ring. Jeff's approach was, "Just tell me what to do, man, and I'll do it". That's fascinating insight into how the brothers worked as a unit.

Matt doesn't think he thrived until breaking away to play the 'Version One' gimmick.

He told Jericho that doing something outwith The Hardy Boyz let him creatively vent, and it was subconsciously pleasing because he'd always been aware that Jeff was the golden boy. His magnetism and high-risk style made him more popular universally, and with Vince. It was difficult to break that when they were together.
