During that same feud with 'Taker in 2002, Ric suffered an almighty crisis of confidence that stopped him from having matches he wanted to have. This is something Chris Jericho wrote about in one of his first few books; Jericho claims that Flair told him he'd helped him come out of a funk when they worked together in the summer.

'Taker beat him to it.

He'd asked Triple H to gauge Ric's interest in a program heading into WrestleMania X-8. Flair was touched, but he fretted and fretted about giving The Undertaker a match he deserved. During his entrance that night, the once-arrogant 'Naitch' couldn't shake the cobwebs. He wouldn't come out of his shell until taking a 'Taker big boot on the ring apron.

Flair had botched his timeless flip spot over the ropes seconds before. He described himself back then as a "cosmetic nightmare", and can only wonder how much better the match would've been had he been in a better place mentally, or the Ric Flair of the 1980s.
