The fiery, profanity-filled lyrics of the 1999 track 'Simon Says' by Pharoahe Monch have always made the tune a firm favourite to Samoa Joe. Realising he couldn't use the song when working in front of a predominantly young audience in WWE, he instead decided to lift the beginning sample and suggest it be followed by different music.

Unhappy with the first piece of music that Triple H presented him with in NXT, Joe suggested that WWE rework the opening bars of 'Simon Says' and turn it into something he could use; Pharoahe Monch had also lifted the roaring sound from Godzilla movies, and Joe felt that would fit in with his physically dominating character.

Joe told Y2J that he's always been a huge fan of Godzilla, so it was a natural extension of his real-life passion to mix that with wrestling to produce his new ring music. Triple H liked the idea, as well as using a hip-hop sound for Joe generally, so his WWE track was reworked into the song fans now know as 'Destroyer'.

Godzilla and a rap artist from New York are to thank for coming up with the Samoan's WWE soundtrack.
