Post-injury, Rollins reclaimed the WWE Title, worked with Finn Bálor for the new Universal belt, feuded with Chris Jericho and worked against his old mentor Triple H at WrestleMania 33. Throughout it all, the man never felt comfortable or like anything was clicking. That didn't happen until he teamed with Dean Ambrose.

The pair patched up their differences in the summer of 2017 and started striving to become the new Raw Tag-Team Champions. Rollins told Edge and Christian that house shows around this period started to become fun again, and he found himself back in the groove he'd lost after getting injured.
