Mick Foley didn't know WWE's plan to put him against Steve Austin was going ahead at first. That's why he pitched a feud with Terry Funk (whom his Cactus Jack character had been teaming with as Chainsaw Charlie) for the post-WrestleMania months.

Jack's big idea was to bring back the hardcore mayhem he and Terry had shared over in Japan. He posed a 'Best Of Seven' series that would mimic what they'd done together in death matches across the globe before coming to WWE.

Vince McMahon, understandably loath to book gimmicks like explosions or barbed wire without careful thought, ultimately decided against Mick's suggestion. That meant no C4, no career-shortening brawls (for now) and no match at Funk's Double Cross Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.

The chair-related violence fans witnessed at the Royal Rumble in January hinted at the kind of shared chaos Foley and Funk had in mind.
