Rather candidly, Bruce told viewers that WWE didn't have a backup plan if Shawn Michaels couldn't work the main event as scheduled.

A serious back injury suffered in a Casket Match against The Undertaker at Royal Rumble had threatened HBK's role at 'Mania, and he was in tremendous pain by the time he rolled into Boston. At that point, WWE had to rally and think how they could get the belt off Shawn.

That was the only suggestion. There was zero talk of the match not happening; Prichard said that officials weren't concerned about presenting an alternate headliner for fans. Their only worry was patching Michaels up enough that he could drop the title to Austin.

There was no contingency plan in place had Shawn pulled up or been rushed to hospital on the day. In effect, WWE were crossing their fingers and praying that the champion would be able to pass the torch.
