Al's next gimmick was the goofy Leif Cassidy as part of The New Rockers. As any older fan will tell you, anything with the word 'New' in the title is guaranteed to be a failure, and this update on the Marty Jannetty/Shawn Michaels teen heartthrob gimmick was no different. Al was just a bit out of his comfort zone here.

There was an air of parody about the team, almost like they were supposed to grate on fans and come across as colossal dorks. How else could you explain those ridiculous high-fives or Leif doing a backstroke motion on his way to the ring? Whether or not the duo were meant to be a send up, Marty wasn't a fan of ripping his once-over gimmick.

That's something Al says he can't blame Jannetty for. In the 1980s and into the '90s, Marty was in a serious team who were going places. Now, he was shoved into a situation wherein taking the proverbial out of that success was encouraged.
