The Cruiserweight Classic was billed as including competitors from 16 countries, and whilst this was true to a degree it still took some reaching. Ariya Daivari and TJ Perkins represented Iran and The Philippines respectively despite both being born and growing up in the United States, and WWE also took some liberties with regards to what constituted a country as Scotland and Hong Kong were also represented.

Still, even this nitpicking can't quell the fact that this was a truly international tournament. The final four consisted of wrestlers from the United Kingdom, Mexico, Japan and Philippines/USA, the four great wrestling strongholds. Elsewhere men from Pakistan, Germany, Australia and Chile impressed, whilst the standby competitors included one from Turkey.

Professional wrestling truly is a universal sport, a language that transcends words and grammar. This tournament was a celebration of what make pro graps special all across the globe.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
