When WWE first started their relaunched Cruiserweight division with a tournament back in 2016, both Ciampa and Johnny Gargano viewed it as a ticket into the company. Eventually, they'd find out that Tommaso wasn't going to be part of the brackets for the Cruiser Classic, and both were disappointed. That's when Ciampa went to Triple H.

Brave move.

Ciampa's polite pitch was that he and Gargano could tear the house down for WWE if they were put against one another in the tourney. Triple H could see what Tommaso was getting at. There were going to be 16 matches on the 23 June taping of the First Round, and Ciampa fancied sending exhausted fans home happy with a stunner against his good pal.

Trips agreed to the idea and put Ciampa in as a last-minute replacement. The rest, as they say, is history. That's when WWE realised how much chemistry both men had together.
