Bart Gunn, the eventual winner of the entire thing, also thought it was f*cking stupid.

When Bruce Prichard sat him down to ask if he'd be interested in entering, Gunn told him it wasn't the kind of thing he'd be into. It wasn't until ex-WWF announcer Kevin Kelly had a talk with Bart that things changed. KK noted that Gunn was stagnating in the lower mid-card, and hadn't been doing anything since The Smoking Gunns tag-team broke up.

What if he could win? This 'Brawl For All' might, in theory, lead to a massive push and major paydays against top stars like Steve Austin. That thinking caught Gunn's attention, and he later told Prichard that he was all in on the tournament. Like McMahon before him, Bart would come to regret that decision.

He should've stuck to his guns (ahem) and told the company to shove it. However, these shoot fights did offer Bart the opportunity to test himself and carve out a niche for himself as a legit tough guy. That, and the lure of cash, was hard to knock back.
