10 Things We Learned From Vince McMahon's Variety Interview
6. Hearing The Media Talk About Wrestling Is Still Cringeworthy
Variety were in attendance for the 23 April edition of SmackDown, and reading their account of the evening will have hardcore fans palming their foreheads. Generic statements like, "Attendees have paid up to hundreds of dollars to see their favorite wrestling stars in the flesh and keep up with the soap opera-like storylines that McMahon and his team craft with great care" sum it up.
It's cringeworthy at times.
Granted, this article isn't necessarily aimed at the hardcore grappling fan. There will be casuals or non-fans browsing through, and so it makes sense that the editors would want to explain to those people what McMahon's WWE does. That's fine, but the genericism of the three or four paragraphs dedicated to this SmackDown trip make it painfully boring.
On that episode, Kevin Owens showed his true colours and turned on Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods as the show went off the air. Most could see that coming at some point, but reading Variety's lengthy account of things leaves one believing it was the shock of the century.
