10 Things We Learned From Vince Russo On Stone Cold's Podcast
5. Neither Men Think The Recent Ricochet / Ospreay Match Is Pro-Wrestling
It's been the subject of many online articles, blogs and vlogs recently and here we get an exclusive conversation between two of wrestling biggest voices. Some see the recent Richochet and Ospreay match as sublime, modern professional wrestling, others as more like a choreographed dance routine. Stone Cold and Russo are complimentary but clearly in the latter camp on this one.
Vince starts the conversation, mentioning how Vader had been crucified online when he joined the debate and sarcastically making the point that he's in a better position to comment than most people. He goes on to say that the reason people like himself take offence to matches like this is because it is not pro-wrestling. He said he would have no problem if they labelled the match as anything else. He goes back to his three core elements of wrestling and states that this match had none of the three, especially that it didn't look like a real fighting contest.
Stone Cold concurs with Russo's opinion as he often does throughout the podcast. Interesting here that though these men are held in such different esteem today, they actually hold many of the same opinions. Austin says the timing, precision and execution were excellent and said that they achieved in one take what many movie sets would take ten to fifty takes to do.
He also gives credit to their athletic ability but upholds the opinion that it did not look like a real fight and likened it more to performance art than professional wrestling.
Vince closes the section saying it reminded him of the exhibition match from Rocky III and saying that he cannot enjoy any match which doesn't feel like one of the parties wants to win the match.
