10 Things We Learned From WWE's Mae Young Classic First Round
3. Shayna Baszler Could Be Asuka's Natural Heir
Though the segment is yet to air on NXT TV, Asuka's departure from WWE's developmental brand was confirmed last week. After 510 days as NXT Women's Champion (and a two-year undefeated streak), 'The Empress Of Tomorrow' is heading to the main roster, leaving a massive hole at the top of the pecking order.
Fortunately, WWE may already have the answer in Shayna Baszler.
A genuine women's MMA pioneer, Baszler has only been wrestling for two years, but you'd never tell from watching her. Trained by former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett, her work naturally revolves around MMA-esque holds, strikes, and transitions, and while Baszler made short work of her first round opponent, she stood out more than most.
Shayna and Asuka have clear stylistic differences, but both carry an aura of intimidation. Baszler's comes from her legitimacy as a mixed martial artist, the way she carries herself, and her no nonsense promo style. Oh yeah, and she just so happens to be one of Ronda Rousey's closest friends.
She might be 37 years old, but WWE would be wise to sign Shayna immediately: she's a natural, and if the company book her correctly, there's no reason she can't dominate NXT.
