Becoming the top contender for Randy Orton's WWE Title on the 18 April 2017 episode of SmackDown Live was naturally a huge moment for Jinder Mahal. His post-match promo with Renee Young is one of the blue brand's most memorable moments this year, but it wasn't supposed to hint at racism whatsoever.

Originally planning to depict himself as an underdog who had overcome all the odds, Jinder was handed a promo draft written exclusively by Vince McMahon. The boss's gut feeling was that using Mahal's Indian heritage in the segment would get him a more heated response from fans, something that proved to be correct.

In order to prepare Mahal for his big moment, McMahon also instructed agents to give Jinder more promo time at house shows. All of this was designed to ready Mahal for a run as WWE Champion. Even though audiences didn't know they were playing into WWE's hands by booing the guy, such heat confirmed to Vince that Jinder was the right choice.
