10 Things WWE Are Struggling To Get Over Right Now
1. Jinder Mahal
The criticism of Jinder Mahal's reign as WWE Champion often goes too far. Sure, he's an awful wrestler, but his character work is generally okay (even if his gimmick is insultingly outdated) and he does project a strong superstar aura. He's completely out of his depth, and should never have been pushed to this level, but he's not the absolute worst WWE Champion in history.
Still, WWE have been unsuccessful in their goal of transforming 'The Modern Day Maharaja' into a universally loathed anti-American heel. He gets the odd boo here and there, and maybe a "USA" chant on a good day, but Mahal's crowd reactions remain muted, particularly for somebody who's supposed to be the top guy on his brand.
Perhaps his push is working in India, but aside from some fired-up Hindi commentary on recent pay-per-views, we have no way of measuring this at the moment. Thus, it cannot be used as a counterpoint.
Jinder's jarringly sudden promotion from jobber to main eventer and clear in-ring deficiencies mean fans may never take him seriously in this role. Perhaps his rise would've been more believable with a slower, more considerate build, but for now, Mahal is the least convincing act in the company, and many fans have reacted accordingly - by not reacting at all.
