10 Things About WWE You Didn't Get Until You Were Older

Remember when we all loved 'head'?

It stands to be said that the WWE€™s current product is aimed at a youth audience more than it ever has been in its history. Such is the essence of the PG era. But it wasn€™t always that way. Anyone who remembers the Attitude era of the late €˜90s will remember that much of what the company was churning out then was in no way suitable for children to be consuming. That being said, the Attitude Era was insanely popular amongst kids of the time, partially because it was so raunchy. It was an era rife with sexual innuendo and double-entendres, and while the WWE has never been known to be subtle by any means, there was definitely a lot of stuff that likely flew way over the head of the average nine-year-old viewer. And it wasn€™t just the Attitude era either. There€™s always been wrestlers or managers with pun-based names or storylines based on the cultural zeitgeist that were clearly meant to click with adult fans only. Younger fans, after all, tend not to ask as many questions or be so critical and will often just go along with it all because heck, that€™s just the way it is in this weird wrestling world. This list will take a look at some of those things you just didn€™t get as a kid but that, years later, made you slap your head or snap your fingers and say €œOhhh€ right.€

I am a writer and stand-up comedian living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I didn't witness the Bret Hart screw job in person, but I did watch the Breaking Point PPV live and that was terrible it its own way. I am dangerously obsessed with professional wrestling and its surrounding culture. I am the current ring announcer for a local fed called the IWS. I got to introduce Tommy Dreamer a while back. My head almost exploded. I am a mark, and proud of it. I also co-host a podcast called Go Plug Yourself, which has featured quite a few local wrestlers and even Mick Foley. Speaking of the Mickster, I once got to be his warmup act when he was in town for comiccon. My head actually exploded that time. I've recovered... sort of.
