10 Things About WWE You Didn't Get Until You Were Older

2. Why Are We Watching A Car Chase During WrestleMania?

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x12f1ts_goldust-vs-rowdy-roddy-piper-hollywood-backlot-brawl-3-31-1996_sport At Wrestlemania 12, Roddy Piper took on Goldust in a Hollywood Backlot Brawl. The whole thing was seriously weird from start to finish, even by wrestling standards. While the brawl did indeed start on a €˜back lot,€™ with much of the fight surrounding Goldust€™s solid gold car, the Bizarre One eventually fled in that very car, with Piper giving hot pursuit in his own vehicle. The audience was then treated to a helicopter-shot low-speed car chase. The car chase sequence was a direct reference to the infamous O.J. Simpson White Bronco police chase, in which the suspected murder fled from the police in similar fashion, in front of the viewing eyes of an entire nation. Cleary an allusion meant to resonate with older fans, its doubtful that many kids understood what the WWE was trying to do with this bit as kids don€™t really tend to be interested in celebrity murder scandals. Unless, of course, the kids are really weird.

I am a writer and stand-up comedian living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I didn't witness the Bret Hart screw job in person, but I did watch the Breaking Point PPV live and that was terrible it its own way. I am dangerously obsessed with professional wrestling and its surrounding culture. I am the current ring announcer for a local fed called the IWS. I got to introduce Tommy Dreamer a while back. My head almost exploded. I am a mark, and proud of it. I also co-host a podcast called Go Plug Yourself, which has featured quite a few local wrestlers and even Mick Foley. Speaking of the Mickster, I once got to be his warmup act when he was in town for comiccon. My head actually exploded that time. I've recovered... sort of.
