WWE had to do more than call Velasquez up with a blanket offer to persuade him throw his hat in the Stamford ring; they had to fight back interest from their brand new rivals and irritants AEW.

The Khan corporation's chief exec. Cody was massively impressed with Cain after working alongside him at AAA's Triplemania, and it's understood the group were in talks with the MMA man before his surprise SmackDown emergence. During AEW's media call this week, The American Nightmare said Velasquez was an athlete "with a natural ability to pick up our industry," admitting he'd love to bring the "stud" over to AEW and reform their team.

Velasquez's WWE bow means that's very unlikely in the short term, though as he hasn't actually signed a contract with the company at present, it could happen sooner than we might expect.
