'Switchblade' Jay White is one of the coolest monikers in all of professional wrestling. The gimmick had a bit of a slow start (the fact that 'Knife Pervert' remains a thing says a lot) but has morphed into an undeniably cool set-up, something that works even better with the old school heel character portraying it.

Like all pro wrestlers before him, White went through a variety of monikers and nicknames before finding his way in the Switchblade era. His early days were punctuated with slightly offensive monikers that found inspiration in White's Kiwi heritage, or at least presumed elements of it. 'Maori' Jay White was a thing in the early days, complete with a Maori flag that few wrestling fans would be able to identify. Was that better than the none-more-generic name of 'All Action' Jay White? You be the judge.

It was Marty Scurll who came up with the finest of all Jay White nicknames. It was birthed at a Varsity Pro Wrestling show that Scurll played a part in booking, and it was The Villain who wrote the necessary information for the ring announcer. As Run DMC's 'It's Like That' blared out the speakers, the announcer wet the whistle of the fans by booming out an unforgettable name around the leisure centre: 'Jumping Jamming Jiggly' Jay White.

Luckily, it didn't stick.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
