WCW didn't hold the annual WarGames match at Fall Brawl 1999, making that show the first Fall Brawl without the double cage gimmick. In 1998, the company had already started messing with the established 'Team vs. Team' format, changing it up so that fans would witness three teams (nine men overall) working against one another.

That changed again when Vince Russo brought WarGames 2000 to Nitro on September 4 of that year. The traditional double ring and double cage idea was abandoned in favour of a new triple-tiered structure first seen during the Ready To Rumble movie WCW had invested in. The only similarity to WarGames was the team-based layout.

WarGames 2000 was not a success. Failing to capture the atmosphere and spirit that had made some previous matches so dramatic, the overbooked mess (there's a surprise) was just another example of WCW throwing things at a wall to see what might stick.
