WrestleMania should be the creative pinnacle of the WWE year, that one night where the stars align and magic is made. Calling it the Holy Grail of professional wrestling most likely wouldn’t be a stretch, and more often than not WWE produces moments worthy of that moniker. WrestleMania 32 was to be the biggest spectacle in wrestling history, with records falling by the wayside at every turn.

Those records fell, but the show itself was an underwhelming drag from start to finish. The main event featured two men that the crowd had no interest in being there, the most dastardly figure in modern WWE cheered as the de-facto babyface over the man WWE desperately wants to be loved. That was bad enough, but Triple H and Roman Reigns went on to put on an unnecessarily long bore to close the show.

Streak or no streak, eyes still turn to The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and a match with him at the Show of Shows is an immense honour. In 2016 this spot was given to the non-wrestling son of the boss to end a story that made no sense from the very beginning.

WrestleMania 32 was almost an exercise in WWE showing their fans that their opinions do not matter. AJ Styles, The New Day, Sasha Banks, and Dean Ambrose all lost when the crowd dearly wanted them to win, the latter in a match with a disinterested Brock Lesnar that must surely go down as one of the most disappointing matches in recent memory.

WrestleMania 33 simply must be better, although it would be equally impressive if it managed to be worse. 2016 was a hit and miss year for WWE, and there is plenty to work on ahead of the new year.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
