WWE released a number of performers in 2016, and whilst some of the names were fairly easy to predict there were a couple of surprises amongst them. Damien Sandow was let go in a move that angered many, but a lot of that goodwill has dissipated in his uninspiring post-WWE performances. The Sandow bandwagon (Sandowagon?) isn’t as densely populated as it once was.

Wade Barrett was also let go, ending one of the most frustrating stories in recent WWE memory. The former Bad News was seen by many as a potential major player for WWE, but years of stop-start pushes and loss after loss left the Englishman floundering in the middle of the card. His presence is and will continue to be missed.

The most talked-about name on the future endeavours list for 2016 however was undoubtedly Cody Rhodes. Despite being lumbered with the lamentable Stardust gimmick Cody was almost assumed as being a future star, but for reasons we may never know he was never given the chance.

Cody is currently carving out a great niche for himself outside of WWE, but if he is never to return to the biggest stage the grandson of a plumber will go down in history as one of WWE’s biggest missed opportunities.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
