Who saw this coming?

While AJ Styles might have inherited the old ‘he could have a five star match with a broomstick’ shtick from Ric Flair, a lot of fans were wondering if Shane McMahon was a broomstick too far. It was puzzling that one of the most athletically gifted in-ring performers of all time was going to be fighting Vince McMahon’s son in the opening bout.

When push came to shove, AJ and Shane pulled off one of the best matches of the night, and told a great story in the process.

Shane came out of the gate mat wrestling, throwing off an overconfident AJ who had assumed he’d be in for a night of strike-dodging and stuntman theatrics. Then he moved on to trading fists and kicks, before hitting a trashcan Coast to Coast dropkick and missing a gorgeous shooting star press.

The right man won in the end, and while AJ made Shane look like a million bucks, McMahon was hardly selfish. Both competitors wound up looking impressive, and AJ’s hard-fought victory felt more ‘earned’ as a result.

We’ll be eating our words about this one for a long time.
