At its core, professional wrestling is all about stories. Say what you will about show's length or individual match quality, but it’s hard to argue that WWE didn’t have its storytelling hat firmly on at WrestleMania 33.

The Women’s Fatal Four Way was all about how three of the Four Horsewomen were forced to work together to topple a much larger foe. Rollins vs Triple H was a passing of the torch (nicely foreshadowed by Rollins’s literal torching-passing entrance) mixed with an injury angle. Shane McMahon vs AJ Styles was effectively a tale of hubris; AJ underestimated his foe, and almost paid the price.

Even The Undertaker’s match, as sad as it was, seemed almost intentionally dour at times. The Undertaker simply couldn’t match Roman Reigns’s youthful speed and stamina, and you could literally see his body giving out at several points throughout the bout. For a man who’s built a career on fantastical gimmicks and unreality, it was surprising to see The Undertaker get so real.

Some stories are just meant to make you cry.
