WWE has been the sole major promotion in North America since WCW's collapse in 2001. TNA/Impact Wrestling, ROH and other indys have put on worthwhile alternatives for hardcore fans, but there's been no genuine threat to the McMahon crown since Nitro bit the dust.

That means WWE has gone almost 18 years without proper, aggressive competition.

UFC and other TV shows generally could be considered rivals, but there's nothing seriously dangerous in terms of pro wrestling. As much as Vince McMahon has always claimed otherwise, that's what WWE are and always will be, and so they've probably forgotten what it's like to be under week-to-week pressure from a like-minded promotion.

Bank balances are swelling, business is great despite some fan unrest and there's zero chance everything could implode tomorrow. That level of comfort is deceptively unhealthy. In 2019, WWE are a super-safe, bloated and stable organisation that has grown relaxed after decades of market domination.

Let's just see how they respond to AEW...
