10 Things WWE Must Do To Ensure WrestleMania 33 Doesn't Suck
4. Find Something New For AJ Styles
There’s little excitement to be found on the planned WrestleMania card, but one match stands out in particular. Speculation suggests that WWE will pair AJ Styles, the consensus best wrestler on the planet, with Shane McMahon. It’s a match nobody asked for, nobody wants to see, and it stands as one of the biggest misuses of a world-class talent in 'Mania history.
Shane’s match with The Undertaker last year was a total snoozefest, aside from the obvious spot. He’s a tremendous bumper, but Shane has never been a particularly compelling all-round worker, despite creating a number of memorable moments over the years. There’s no need for him to step into the ring at this year’s event, particularly against a wrestler as strong as Styles. He’d be best served sticking to his role as SmackDown Commissioner.
WWE would be doing their fans a huge favour by scrapping the contest and giving AJ something else. He’s fresh off one of the most impressive in-ring years in WWE history, and deserves the chance to shine against a top-level opponent on the biggest show of the year. SmackDown is admittedly low on options, but an inter-brand battle with someone like Sami Zayn would be fantastic. All WWE needs to do is weave a basic “Raw vs. SmackDown” narrative around the clash, and they’ll be all-set for what would surely be the night’s most exciting segment.
