10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About John Bradshaw Layfield
6. He Lost To Bart Gunn In The "Brawl For All" Finals
The Brawl For All tournament took place on WWE TV from June 29, 1998 to August 24, 1998. It's one of those things that WWE doesn't like talking about it because it was generally considered to be a bad idea not just because of all the injuries, but how it hurt the perception of the business. If you don't know what it was, it was a legitimate boxing tournament between 16 WWE superstars. Could you imagine explaining to a kid how a punch in a regular wrestling match without boxing gloves doesn't seem to hurt somebody yet once the Brawl for All starts they have guys getting knocked out while they have boxing gloves on their hands? It seemed like it was going against everything that pro wrestling was supposed to be about. Pro wrestling is sports entertainment. It's a performance art. It's not some legitimate sport like boxing, yet for those two months that's what it was presented as. Bradshaw won three fights in the tournament after beating Mark Canterbury (Henry Godwinn), Marc Mero and Darren Drozdov aka Droz to get to the finals against Bart Gunn. http://youtu.be/k9JOEYxwwbk The Gunn/Bradshaw fight didn't last long. Gunn nailed Bradshaw with a left handed hook that knocked Bradshaw down. The ref asked him if he was okay since he got up for a standing eight count. Bradshaw said yes even though he looked like he was out of it. When the fight started again, Gunn nailed him with a devastating left/right combo that knocked out Bradshaw to the point that he ended up face first on the mat. Wrestlers shouldn't box. Boxers shouldn't wrestle. Do what you do for your career, but don't try doing something else. What happened in the finals of the Brawl for All was definitely something WWE wants us to forget because Gunn destroyed him.
