It is one of WWE's most frustrating tropes, but when Damien Sandow won the SmackDown Money in the Bank briefcase in 2013 a number of his supporters feared the worst. In WWE, a surefire way for a young promising heel to enter a career rut is by winning a championship or something equivalent. It makes no sense, but it is how WWE does things.

Sandow's record as Money in the Bank briefcase makes for particularly depressing reading, and was something of a harbinger of things to come. Whilst holding the briefcase Sandow took part in 24 singles matches, coming out on top on nine occasions.

You may have expected that to be worse, but all of his victories came on Main Event or Superstars and also included beating Justin Gabriel three times. More often than not Sandow was on RAW and SmackDown staring at the lights, picking up losses against Rob Van Dam (three times), Christian (twice), Santino Marella, R-Truth, Big Show and more.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
