10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Goldust
4. He Was Supposed To Be Behind GTV
A myth-busting video was uploaded to WWE's YouTube channel a couple of years ago, claiming that the man behind the Attitude Era's nixed "GTV" angle - where wrestlers were recorded backstage via hidden cameras - was originally supposed to be actor/comedian Tom Green.
This explanation, however, has never seemed entirely satisfactory. For one thing, the source cited is Vince Russo, a man with a reputation within the industry for being untrustworthy. You can't discount out the possibility that he came up with this idea after the fact in order to save face.
Besides which, why would they have started airing the skits on TV before they managed to persuade Green to make an appearance? Even for WWE - a company known for nothing if not rash decision-making -that doesn't make a great deal of sense.
A more likely explanation for the storyline being abruptly binned is that it was supposed to be a vehicle for Goldust, who was unexpectedly released from the company right around the same time. As someone with a proclivity for mischief, filming colleagues in compromising situations would have fit his character perfectly (not to mention the fact that his initials fit the acronym too).
