At Vengeance 2007, Morrison bagged his first major singles title win by beating CM Punk to become new ECW Champ. It was a marquee moment for the man, and it showed that WWE were willing to get behind him as a star of the future. It also wasn't the original plan for the pay-per-view.

Chris Benoit was supposed to be Punk's opponent on the show.

WWE excused Benoit's absence as a "family emergency" on the live broadcast. When further details leaked on the tragedy days later, they distanced themselves from the Canadian and ploughed forward with Morrison as the face of ECW. It was all they could really do, in fairness.

Still, it's amazing to think that Morrison only won the belt because WWE needed a quick, last-minute replacement for Benoit. There's no chance of this ever being discussed on screen, for obvious reasons. WWE might avoid talking about the ECW win full stop.
