7. The Joey Mercury Botch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN81rkaVhU4 At Armageddon 2006, Matt was competing alongside brother Jeff in a four-way ladder match, also featuring Paul London & Brian Kendrick, MNM, and the team of William Regal & Dave Taylor. The outcome of the match isn't particularly remembered (London and Kendrick retained their championships), but is instead remembered as the site of a particularly gruesome botch. In an elaborate spot, Jeff leapt onto one end of a horizontal ladder, see-sawing it into the faces of both MNM men. Nitro got out of the way in time, but Joey Mercury was rather less fortunate. The ladder smashed into his face, breaking his nose and orbital bone, and injury which would later require thirty stitches. Although not explicitly Matt's fault - blame could actually be laid at the feet of Joey himself for failing to move quickly enough - he was clearly holding Mercury in position for the spot. His proximity to such a horrific botch means it's certainly something the WWE would rather have you forget about his career.
