WrestleMania 22 was seen as a sort of changing of the guard. Even though John Cena was already the WWE World Champion and the biggest star in the company, he had yet to compete in the main event of WrestleMania. He got his chance in Chicago, defeating Triple H via submission to cement that fact that his era had begun.

Two years later, Triple H was once again WWE World Champion, but it didn't change the fact that John Cena was still on top of the company. All of WWE's fans had come to embrace or accept it, but Triple H still remembered 'Mania 22 and, despite the fact that his full-time career was coming to an end, he wanted to get one up on Cena.

The two men battled at Night of Champions 2008, headlining the show in a WrestleMania rematch. Much was made of the fact that Cena won the last time they wrestled, telegraphing the ending of the bout. Sure enough, Cena - who had spent the year failing to recapture the WWE World Title - was defeated once again, falling to the Pedigree.
