Rob Van Dam's 2013 return to WWE was never going to be groundbreaking. The 42-year-old former champion was only back for a temporary run, meaning that the company wasn't going to invest to heavily in him. On top of that, RVD isn't charismatic the same way someone like Chris Jericho is, where he can make almost anything work.

It didn't help that WWE had no idea how to use Van Dam. The "Whole Dam Show" got into a feud with World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio - a feud he had no chance of winning - and during the course of the program, Del Rio turned on his ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez. Someone decided it would be a good idea to put RVD and Rodriguez together, and that's what happened.

As a duo, the two were terrible. Rodriguez was completely wasted in RVD's corner, while Van Dam didn't really need a second. At Night of Champions, the two had an unremarkable match where Rodriguez functioned as little more than a cheerleader. Had he turned heel on RVD and re-aligned with Del Rio, it could have saved the match and the angle but, as it went, it was better off forgotten.
