Sting's WWE debut was a long time coming, but in 2014, he finally showed up, helping Team WWE defeat The Authority at the Survivor Series. That, of course, was a setup for Triple H and Sting to face off at WrestleMania 31, and even though HHH was victorious, many hoped they hadn't seen the last of Sting.

Sting took some time off, but came back after SummerSlam for a program with WWE World Champion Seth Rollins. He dogged Rollins until Night of Champions, where he finally got his shot - and where Rollins would have to defend both that belt and the U.S. Championship.

Despite having the odds stacked against him, Rollins was a clear favourite to win. After all, Sting was a part-timer and wasn't going to be leaving with the title. Still, fans hoped for a good showing from the 56-year-old, and they got it. At least until the end of the match.

As the bout drew to a close, Rollins threw Sting into the corner with a turnbuckle powerbomb. Unfortunately, the move seriously hurt Sting's neck, and the star collapsed on the next spot. Given a few minutes to recover, Sting was able to finish the match, but it was clear he was hurt. Sure enough, tests determined that he would need surgery and, after going under the knife, Sting was forced to retire.
