10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About No Mercy
4. Fabulous Moolah Wins The Women's Title
The late Fabulous Moolah is a WWE Hall of Famer and considered one of the most important female performers in wrestling history, a trailblazer, if you will. Of course, there have also been many unsavoury allegations made with regards to her conduct and character, leading many to believe she is not the person that WWE wishes to lionise. Regardless, WWE have chosen to show her in the best possible light and she was a presence on WWE television up until her November 2007 death.
Not just a presence, but an actual performer. Beginning in the late 90s, Moolah would often come back for the occasional match (often tagging with best friend Mae Young), which seemed like little more than an excuse for Jerry Lawler to work through his joke book. At No Mercy in 1999, though, WWE dispensed with the comedy and actually had Moolah win the WWE Women's Title from Ivory.
The match itself was really poor, despite Ivory's best efforts and the decision to give Moolah (then in her mid-70s) the title raised more than a few eyebrows. Sure, this was a belt that had been held by glorified pin-ups like Sable and Debra, but this was a septuagenarian winning the gold! It was Attitude Era gimmickry, done just to create a 'moment'.
Ivory won the title back eight days later on Raw, leading many to wonder just what the hell the point of the switch was in the first place. Definitely a title reign to forget.
