10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About The TLC PPV
3. Sheamus Wins His First WWE Title (TLC 2009)
In late 2009, WWE higher-ups decided to create a new main event star with a "Breakthrough Battle Royal" on Raw. The match, featuring stars who had never been world champion before, would determine a contender to John Cena's WWE Championship. When the dust had settled, the winner wasn't Kofi Kingston, MVP, or even the implausibly-entered Randy Orton - it was newcomer Sheamus, who hadn't proven himself to be anything but large and uninteresting. Despite the challenger's lack of credibility, WWE decided to go all the way with him - at TLC, Sheamus defeated John Cena in a tables match, accidentally putting him through the wood to become the company's champion. Decision-makers weren't even willing to have "The Celtic Warrior" score a true win over the company's top babyface, but they made him the titleholder regardless. Six years later, not much has changed.
