By the Summer of 1998, Vader was beginning to really slide down the totem pole in the WWF. He had turned babyface by defending the United States against The Hart Foundation, but it was clear he was propping up the mid card more than being in the main event picture.

At Over The Edge in May, '98, he faced Kane in a 'Mask vs. Mask' bout. Vader was booked to lose, and his character appeared melancholy following the defeat.

Exiting the ring, he was approached by Michael Cole for a quick interview. It seems frustration got the better of the man, who swore and referred to himself as a 'big fat piece of s**t'.

By losing the mask and showing such vulnerability, the previously-imposing Vader character was reduced greatly. He would remain in the company until later in the year, before finally calling it a day in the WWF.

Art imitated real life in this instance, Vader didn't seem to have much of a future in the company, something his words referred to. "Maybe Vader time is over" was also uttered during the promo.
