10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Women's Wrestling

10. Santina Marella

Hands up who misses Santino Marella? Okay, I don't actually miss the guy, He had his moments (his tea party with Sheamus was particularly chucklesome), but he was also involved in some genuine stinkers. The lowest such stinker was undoubtedly his crowning as 'Miss WrestleMania' at WrestleMania XXV.

Yes, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania a battle royal was held to crown the very first 'Miss WrestleMania'. Santino wanted a spot in the match, but was unable to secure a place on account of being a man. Never fear however, as Marella was a crafty one. Not only that, but whomever was officiating the match was obviously an idiot.

Santino dressed up as a woman and became Santina, Santino's twin sister, and subsequently won the battle royal by standing around awkwardly and then eliminating Beth Phoenix and Melina at the last. This led to a feud with Vickie Guerrero, which ended with a Hog Pen match at Extreme Rules. What a respectful way to treat the Miss WrestleMania crown.

WWE was already doing women's wrestling a disservice by continuing to throw its female performers into meaningless battle royals, yet they somehow topped their own idiocy by having a man win the one that had meaning.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
