10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Women's Wrestling

9. Man On Woman Violence

Despite the improvements in the presentation of women's wrestling, don't expect to see Bayley, Nia Jax, and Alicia Fox et al depicted as anything less than inferior to the men inside the ring. Male vs. Female isn't going to happen any time soon, and there have even been rumours of top independent wrestlers being looked over due to having competed in such matches.

The Attitude Era was a miserable time for women in truth, as they were either treated as strippers or as shock recipients of extreme violence. The Dudley Boyz famously powerbombed Mae Young through a table, one of many female victims of the boys from Dudleyville. This was designed to get the duo over as nasty heels, but the crowd couldn't contain their joy. It worked better with the completely unlikeable Jeff Jarrett, who had a tendency to blast women over the head with his guitar.

These moments aren't going to be featuring in any video packages about the history of women in WWE any time soon, and don't expect Charlotte vs. Sami Zayn either. This is pro wrestling, where we're supposed to believe that being thrown towards ropes means you run back towards your opponent but we can't accept a technical battle between man and woman.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
