One of the most iconic moments of the Monday Night Wars is undoubtedly Madusa throwing the WWF Women's Championship into the bin on an episode of WCW Monday Nitro. It was a true shot fired, a sign that WCW was willing to stoop to any depth to disrespect and discredit the WWF, that the gloves were well and truly off. Sure, WCW then did a grand total of absolutely nothing with women's wrestling, but we all remember this moment.

Which makes it rather puzzling that we all sort of forget that Madusa didn't just show up on Nitro and trash the belt in a sort of 'Invasion' moment. Madusa, who wrestled as Alundra Blayze in the WWF, was actually fired by Vince McMahon just before showing up on Nitro. Blayze was the Women's Champion at the time, having recently defeated Bertha Faye for the title.

McMahon had such little interest or faith in women's wrestling that he was willing to let his champion go as a money-saver. We all remember Madusa throwing the title in the bin, but by releasing their champion the WWF pretty much did the same thing. Many were shocked at this act of disrespect, but McMahon & Co would far surpass it in years to come.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
