10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About WrestleMania 27

8. Edge Went Out With A Win... At Alberto Del Rio's Expense

Alberto Del Rio debuted in WWE in late 2010, and quickly rose up the card with a victory in the largest Royal Rumble match of all-time, 2011's 40-man affair. The Mexican aristocrat looked poised to become a huge star, but he was immediately undermined when the title match he earned against Edge was placed as WrestleMania XXVII's opener. The Del Rio-Edge match was a decent contest, but not quite at the level of a WrestleMania World Title bout. Edge won, which was a surprising victory, then destroyed Del Rio's car after the bout. Eight days later, Edge retired. It turned out that the World Heavyweight Champion was suffering from spinal stenosis, and further competition meant he'd be putting his health at great risk. WWE knew this prior to WrestleMania (but not the severity of it), but decided to let "The Rated-R Superstar" go out on a high note, winning at the show and retiring as World Heavyweight Champion. That sounds nice, but Del Rio really could have used the victory to kickstart a main event run. Instead, he never quite lived up to expectations, and it can all be traced back to choking on the big stage.
