10 Things You Didn't Know About The Wrestler
2. "The Total Package" Randy Robinson
In storyline, Randy Robinson's days as a main eventer had reached their peak in the late 1980s. One problem the studio ran into, however, was depicting the highs of his wrestling career and establishing Robinson as a superstar of yesteryear.
In order to recreate the fictional history of "The Ram" in all his glory, old school images and retro wrestling posters were displayed in cascading fashion during the movie’s opening sequence. Complete with '80s hair metal soundtrack and overdubbed wrestling commentary, it was an easy yet effective way of illustrating Robinson's peak years in the business.
However, there was the small issue of portraying Rourke himself in the boots of the musclebound superstar during his '80s heyday; the solution came in the form of 'The Total Package' Lex Luger. Actual vintage photos of Luger during his NWA run with Jim Crockett Promotions were used and modified to become images of Randy Robinson.
Luger's shape and look, coupled with the time frame of the photos, made him the perfect candidate and, with a few tweaks, provided a believable representation of Robinson when he was atop the the wrestling mountain. The results were flawless and the photoshopped Luger became a believable Randy The Ram.
