10 Things You Didn't Know About Bret Hart

7. Bret Hart Tried To Injure Jerry Lawler For Real At SummerSlam 1993

Hart has openly prided himself on being safe to work with, and never seriously hurting any opponents. That's a bit of stretch, since Hart admits to torturing Lawler once when the opportunity presented itself. Lawler had legitimately jacked up Hart's ribs at the King of the Ring during the coronation, and then at SummerSlam itself, "The King" carelessly cracked a gimmicked crutch across Bret's face, leaving "The Hitman" seeing stars. The finish to their match entailed Lawler submitting to Hart's Sharpshooter, and then Hart keeping the hold applied out of spite. For three and a half minutes, they followed the script, except Hart cinched up the leglock with all of his strength. Watching the spectacle and knowing this, one sees Lawler banging his head on the mat and grabbing his own scalp in sheer agony. Hart later claimed that Lawler couldn't even stand up in the locker room after the work-turned-real.
