10 Things You Didn't Know About Brodie Lee

8. His Name Wasn't A Nod To Bruiser Brody

It is easy to draw parallels between Brodie Lee and Bruiser Brody. Wild-eyed look and out of control hair all over the place? Check. An intensity that began long before either man stepped into the ring? Of course. Clotheslines? Chaos? Charisma? All there. Brodie Lee made no secret of his love for Bruiser Brody, leading many to assume that his moniker was a nod in the direction of the Super Beast.

That may have been the case had Brodie been a superstar-in-waiting from the get-go, but such things are never so simple. Brodie's ring name was actually inspired by the classic 1995-film Mallrats, and to a lesser extent the wider View Askewniverse. That'll be the world of Kevin Smith creations, for the record.

A fan of the fictional universe, Brodie also happened to bear more than a passing resemblance to Jason Lee, the future 'My Name Is Earl' star who played the role of Brodie Bruce in Mallrats. Take Brodie, add Lee, get Brodie Lee. Not a chain-wielding iconic hoss to be seen, although the happy coincidence wasn't going to be ignored entirely.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
