Vince would change his mind eventually, and Laurer would make her debut in the World Wrestling Federation in 1997. Her first appearance came as an apparent fan at ringside, choking out Marlena (Terri Runnels) whilst her charge Goldust was going up against Triple H in the ring. She was christened Chyna, and her first role was that of bodyguard for Triple H before performing that role for the D-Generation X faction.

It could all have been so different however. As the WWF was dilly-dallying over whether or not to bring her in, Laurer was approached by World Championship Wrestling. The rival promotion was seriously interested in bringing her, and wished for her to be the sole female member of the recently established New World Order.

As the reports go, Laurer actually went so far as to verbally accept the offer. It wasn't until Shane McMahon informed her that WWF were going to sign her that she turned WCW down, opting for the north over the south.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
