10 Things You Didn't Know About Eddie Guerrero

1. He Wrestled For Ring Of Honor Whilst WWE IC Champion

After he was released by WWE in 2001 after getting a DUI following a stay in drug rehab, Eddie's personal and professional life was in tatters. He had nothing left, hitting rock bottom. He hadn't wrestled regularly since reporting to rehab in May and wasn't sure if he even wanted to wrestle any more.

The passion was going. But, little by little, he started being booked for independent shows and proved that he didn't have an ego by volunteering to put over future stars like Low Ki and CM Punk in front of small crowds. He was working long matches for comparatively minuscule pay but he was regaining the drive and passion that helped him make it to WWE in the first place. Eddie even made his way back to NJPW for one tour and wrestled a match for Ring of Honor, losing to Super Crazy on their first show.

Eddie's performances and conduct on the indies and in Japan convinced WWE to give him a second chance and he was re-hired in March 2002. But Eddie had already agreed to wrestle another show for Ring of Honor and, true to his word, he returned to the company as WWE Intercontinental Champion to team with The Amazing Red, beating The SATs (Joel and Jose Maximo). Eddie cut a speech after the match thanking everyone in the company for believing in him and putting over the wrestlers and fans. The locker room emptied and hoisted Eddie on their shoulders, showing their appreciation for the veteran. There are only two of them, but Eddie's ROH matches are worth tracking down and watching.
